The Lesson of the Pump

By Craig Tucker

One day I was listening to Zig Ziglar talk about the importance of making a decision and sticking to it. He illustrated this section of his seminar by using a pump. The kind of pump I am talking about is the one located outside your house. It has a long handle you work up and down and a spout where the water comes out and long pipe that goes down into the ground to the water source. You might have seen them in an old country and western.

Zig would start getting on it about never giving up and you would hear that pump handle on the tape going up and down, and the more he got into his point the faster and harder that pump handle would move up and down. You would hear Zig tell you not to stop because you never knew were the water was in the pipe. "If you stopped pumping the water would all go back into the well", He Said.

And the pump kept getting louder and faster and Zig just kept going at the pump handle.

On and on, don't give up you would hear him say. And just like it had been there all along the water started pouring out of the spout. You could hear the water flowing freely as you heard Zig say that when you get it going and you persist long enough you can have all the water you want. But he also said that life is like that.

The first part of my life I was raised outside of Tascosa TX., 5 miles from Boys Ranch and 50 miles northwest of Amarillo TX. It was the late fifties and I remember going out to the pump with my mom and pouring the water into the top of it to prime it. And then I would start to pump. Don't stop son my mom would say, the water is just about there, pump a little harder it's

almost there, but I was still small and it took a lot for me, and the water would end up going back into the well.

All for not, almost, but for the lesson of the pump.

Every day I kept going to the pump and it kept giving me my lesson. But one day, with the help of my mom's persistence and guidance, the pump started giving me the water I wanted. And it gave me a lesson I have never forgotten. The lesson of the pump.
